I read with interest your publication in last week’s Watford Observer (16 March) of the manifestos of the three candidates running to be Mayor of Watford.

Like most of your other readers, I am sure, I have already been deluged with leaflets detailing much of what these three individuals state in your paper. What I have not been able to establish is what specific qualifications and experience each of these three individuals has to qualify them for this role.

It is normal when applying for a job to submit your CV, and smarter applicants tailor this document to the specific role in question. Which brings me to my second problem. What exactly is the Mayor of Watford accountable and responsible for? As far as I can see the only information available on the Council’s website is pretty vague. The most useful statement merely says: “The Mayor represents the interests of Watford residents and leads Watford Borough Council and its full range of services”. This is not a job description, nor does it give any insight into what the Mayor is personally responsible for.

Perhaps in the coming weeks in your newspaper you could correct these omissions? Firstly by publishing a proper job description for the role of Mayor of Watford, and then publishing the CVs of each of the candidates, so that as voters we can make a judgement as to whether the candidates really are qualified for this role, rather than simply relying on their assertions that this is the case.
