Hertsmere’s unsung heroes have been recognised at the council’s annual civic awards.

From the leader of a girl guides unit to a dedicated player in a brass band and the chairman of a residents association, the great and the good in the borough were rewarded in this year’s awards ceremony, held at Elstree Studios on Saturday 24 March.

There were seven award winners who were honoured by the Mayor of Hertsmere Cllr Charles Goldstein in front of an audience of councillors, dignitaries, and community members.

They include Andrew Grady, a member of Borehamwood Brass band for the past 20 years, governor at Hertswood Academy and Cranborne primary school, Ann Harrison, for her dedication to schools, and Edith Oakley, who has raised thousands for blood cancer charity Bloodwise.

Chairman of Warren Estate residents association Raymond Coffer, 4th Bushey Guides leader Vivien Hewett, Frederick Thomas, a volunteer at Citizens Advice Hertsmere for 40 years, and Lewis Osbourne, who has served at the Citizens Advice Bureau were also recognised.

Mayor Cllr Charles Goldstein said: “The award winners have done so much to benefit others in Hertsmere and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to thank them for their efforts.

“Each person who received an award has made a difference to their community and helped make the area an even safer and happier place to live and work.”

Mr Grady said: “When I realised that I’d actually been nominated by Cllr Pat Strack I was taken back, quite a bit, and it’s sort of like pinching me that I’m recognised for what I do within the community.

“It’s a real sense of achievement and pride..”

Mr Grady moved to Borehamwood from Yorkshire and has been a part of the brass band ever since he moved to the area. He is involved with a number of projects and occasions across the year, including playing the ‘Last Post’ at the Remembrance Sunday parade as well as concerts throughout the year at churches across Borehamwood.
