Do you know anyone who got married in a church in Abbots Langley in 1955?

A couple are reaching out to the four other couples who tied the knot on the same day as them, on March 21 in 1955 in St Paul’s Church, Langleybury.

Married for a happy 63 years, Pat and Derek Green, who live in Carpenders Park, Watford were one of five couples who wed before the financial year ended as a means to get their entire tax from the year back.

Mrs Green said: “I found an old newspaper clipping from the 50’s announcing our wedding, which happened to take place alongside four other couples on the same day and place.

“I remember getting a phone call from the vicar asking to move the time of our wedding to fit in with the others, which was a bit of a problem at the time as we’d already sent out the invites.”

“We’d love to see if any of the other couples are still around.”

Mrs Green, a retired administrator and Mr Green, a retired BT engineer are the proud parents of Terry, 59, Robert, 60 and Steven, 62 and have lived in their family home in Carpenders Park for the past 60 years.

Meeting in the early 50’s, Mrs Green met Mr Green as he played for the same football team as her dad, Langleybury team.

Mrs Green said: “Derek was a bricklayer, before being sent off for national service at the age of 20. He was initially writing letters back to my friend but she got married whilst he was away.

“I was going to write to him instead but she’d already thrown his letters in the fire.

Then by a twist of fate, they bumped into each other by Watford Junction after Mr Green was demobbed in 1954 and back home.

Mrs Green said: “He wrote me a valentines card shortly after asking if I wanted to go on a date to watch Watford FC play. We married in March the following year (1955).

“We’re happily married, we have our little arguments but we always come out the other side.”

Celebrating their 63 years of marriage with a quiet meal with friends, Mrs Green revealed the secret of their lasting relationship.

She said: “We’ve always kept ourselves busy. We really enjoy line dancing and bingo- we like to keep active.

“I like to bowl but Derek says its like watching paint dry. Derek’s legs don’t let him do very much anymore so he does the garden and crosswords to keep his brain active, even if his body isn’t."
