We took to the streets of Watford to find out what fans think about increasing the capacity of Vicarage Road.

The Hornets are currently in talks with Watford Borough Council about increasing its seats from 21,577 to 30,000 or 25,000.

Here is what fans told us just before the team's 2-1 defeat to Burnley on Saturday.

The Hills family from Welwyn Garden City.

Watford Observer:

Richard Hill, 64, said: “I think it will be good with all the gaps being filled, there’s a waiting list so maybe we’ll be getting more people coming because they’re will be more space.

“9000 might be a bit too much, I think they should increase in stages maybe a few thousand at a time.”

Graham Hills, 65: “Now we are in the premier league the audience has grown in the past you have seen it grow from 13,000 to 14,000, so the demand has been there.”

Matt Hill, 24, said: “I look at Cardiff they increased their stadium and got relegated and now you see lots of empty seats.

"For us the atmosphere has been there but 9000 might be too much.”

Simon, 48, Robert, 47, Richard, 74, from Hemel Hempstead

Watford Observer:

Richard said: “Sounds good if they can fill it. We could probably give more seats to the away side.

“That would make much more sense than having it all empty on one side.

“Do we even get 21 thousand people at the stadium, I don’t think so.”

Simon said: “The extra seats might not be that much they obviously have plans in the future. Presumably they know how much it needs to work out.”

Robert said: “The demand is there they might struggle to find an extra 9000, maybe for the big matches they can do it.”

Simon, 61, and John, 25, Kilpatrick, from Aylesbury

Watford Observer:

Robert said: “I think overall it’s a good idea. The thing is, I don’t think we're selling enough tickets even as we are. I wouldn’t like to see it half empty.

“On the other hand if it we're to be successful we have to increase the capacity.

“They’ve now got the investment to do it whereas in the past they haven’t.”

John said: “We’ve been in the Premier League for three seasons, so we have to increase our capacity, but, if we can't fill it, we don’t want it to be empty.

“I think it’s to do with season tickets if people don’t turn up then those seats will be empty.”

Tom Shepherd, 53, from Hemel Hempstead

Watford Observer:

Tom said: “Well I think if they can be put in and we can stay here it can increase income. I know there has been talk about moving stadium, but if we can stay then I don’t think it’s a bad idea at all.”

“If it helps the club and increases income then it’s great.

“I don’t believe we will struggle getting people to come in, we’re in the premier league now.

“There is a waiting list for season tickets and with the seats I think it’ll result in more people coming in and more money coming into the club, which can only be a good thing.”

Anthony Newcomb, 29, from Harrow

Watford Observer:

“We definitely won’t be able to fill 30,000 seats, in the championship we could only fill 13,000 to 14,000.

“Although, with the Premier League we might get more people coming in, but I’m sure it’s well thought through.

“I know we had issues on the disabled seats and we haven’t been meeting our quotas in having access. It would be good if we are able to get people with disabilities to come.

“They had projects like this before, I’ve been going to matches since 1996 back in the old east stand and the wooden floors.

“The stadium’s beautiful now, when we had three stands it was an embarrassment but now it’s a place to be proud of.”

Mark Rose, 34, John Rouleay, 33, from Hemel Hempstead

Watford Observer:

John said: “We’ve been going to Watford games for 25 years. I love what the Pozzo’s have done, that they came in and kept the identity of the club even with the proposed expansion they have said they want to keep the feel of vicarage Road and turn it into a Premier League ground that was a difficult balance.

“I don’t want to be in a bowl stadium that doesn’t feel like Vicarage Road.

“You have got to look upwards haven’t you, so I say go for it 30,000 bring it on.”

Mark said: “I’ll be happy with that as long as we stay in the Premier League and gate crash into the Europa League. Then we will quite easily draw the crowds in.

“It will draw in more people, and as people see a good English club you’ll grow the next generation of fans.

“As long as we don’t get relegated, you could have a half empty stadium and that will affect the team.

“When you playing in front of a full crowd it affects your confidence, I would prefer 20 thousand full to 30,000 part empty.”
