An art competition helped schools mark the 100th anniversary of women getting the right to vote for the first time.

Watford MP Richard Harrington has annnounced the winners of the competition.

Students were invited to get creative and design anything from a suffragette banner or sash, to a badge, photo or drawing.

He had over 100 entries and here are the winners:

Secondary school 

  • 1st – Connor Teefy and Lisa Sadchikova from Croxley Danes School
  • 2nd – Lottie Park from St Clement Danes School
  • 3rd – Stephanie Lauren Swaby from Stanborough School Primary

Primary school 

  • 1st – Daania from Chater Junior School
  • 2nd – Yuktha from Bushey and Oxhey Infant School
  • 3rd – Florissa from Bushey and Oxhey Infants School

The winners will receive a prize as well as a tour and tea at the Houses of Parliament.

Prizes will also be given to runners up and all participants will get a certificate.

The Representation of the People Act 1918 was a vital step towards the rights women have today, and the centenary of that Act is an important opportunity for us to reflect on our progress.

Richard Harrington MP said: “We had over 100 entries from six local schools and I was so impressed by the high quality of the work and the creativity shown! I'm delighted to announce the names of the winners.”
