A long boat worker discovered an unexploded World War Two weapon as he used a magnet to recover scrap metal from a canal.
Police were called to Water Lane in Kings Langley at 3.25pm to reports of a suspected unexploded mortar under a bridge over the Grand Union Canal near the Ovaltine building.
The specialist EOD bomb disposal unit attended and safely removed the item which they confirmed was a WW2 tank mortar.
During the incident, road closures along Station Road and Waterside were put in place to ensure the safety of the public.
Those that live in Water Lane were allowed to return to their homes, as long as they did not have to cross the bridge.
Part of the canal was also closed.
