May Day in Cassiobury Park

Everyone is invited to join the fun at Watford Borough Council’s May Day celebration in Cassiobury Park on Bank Holiday Monday from 1-3pm. There will be Morris dancers performing at the resplendent bandstand. You’ll also be able to make your own May crown or Green Man mask. If that wasn’t enough, the free-to-enter Cassiobury splash pools have now reopened for the spring and summer seasons.

Dotty Art

Harrow-based artist Karun Soni, aka Dotty Art, will be exhibiting a selection of oil paintings. His dotty style art is a juxtaposition of his South Asian heritage and his life as a young British Asian. Using fragmented brush strokes, he creates wild explosions of colour with high contrast and fun. Karun has been professionally painting for over seven years. As a Graphic Design graduate and freelancer, Karun also works with companies to create unique digital illustrations and graphics.

MrASingh

Artist MrASingh (aka Amrit Singh) will be displaying two collections. He creates his intricate art using mixed media techniques and vivid colours. MrASingh is inspired by the naturally occurring patterns in nature; from animals and plants to microorganisms. His work celebrates the beauty of nature, taking inspiration from different cultures from around the world. The award-winning creative director, artist and content creator from Birmingham has worked on print, digital and social media campaigns for companies around the world and is one of the UK’s top creative live streamers.

Short Stories with The Asian Writer

The Asian Writer is the voice of British Asian writing and is for readers and writers interested in South Asian literature. Since 2012, the magazine has celebrated new writing talent through its annual short story competition. Hosted by its editor, Farhana Shaikh, this event will introduce past finalists of the prize and their exceptional writing. Writers will read from their winning stories and discuss their creative process. Featuring writers Meera Betab, Mona Dash, Farhana Khalique, Shibani Lal and Jocelyn Watson. Following this, you will be invited to take part in a creative writing workshop and begin writing your own short story through a series of writing prompts and games.

Bhangra Tots

Fun Bhangra and Bollywood sessions for children aged 2 to 6-years-old with Sohan Kailey of Aashiyana Arts. Children will get to wiggle, giggle and dance, meet Bhangra Bunny, create a Bhangra train and play musical instruments. Sessions are designed to encourage children to learn whilst playing - building confidence, promoting balance, movement, imagination and creativity. The sessions are accompanied by lively upbeat music and finish with a gentle relaxation period.

Spoken Word

Performance poetry and spoken word organisation Apples and Snakes present an evening full of creativity with acclaimed and emerging British Asian talent. Watford 10K

The Watford 10k will take place in Cassiobury Park on Bank Holiday Monday. Runners on the 10K course will once again be passing through the bluebells. There are distances for runners of all ages and abilities, with a 1k and 3k run, as well as the hugely popular 10k course. All your money goes directly to Watford Mencap, who support over 600 people with a learning disability in Watford.

Open Day and Fun Dog Show

NAWT will be holding their annual may family open day and fun dog show, at the Watford centre. It promises to be an action packed event. With over 30 stalls including giftware, raffle, books, grab a bargain for your pet as well as you. This family event is on between 11-4pm, with our special farmyard world with a petting farm and games for children. There is hot food and cream teas, delicious homemade cakes to tempt you. Why not bring your dog along and have ago on our fun agility course or perhaps you would prefer to enter your adorable pooch in the Fun Dog Show, why not let your dog shine.

Herts Fire Brigade Museum Open Day

Come and visit the only fire-related museum in Hertfordshire and see the history of fire-fighting from the early days. The museum has two 19th century manual hand pumps, a 1896 horse-drawn Shand-Mason steam fire pump, a 1937 Leyland pump-escape fire engine that served at St Albans, and a 1942 Dennis trailer pump used during the Second World War. There are also fire-fighter's uniforms that can be tried on and fire-fighting equipment that can be handled.
