A sailor who became the first woman ever to sail around the world solo and non-stop "the wrong way" has begun another epic adventure.

Dee Caffari, 45, from Watford has embarked on a 2,900 mile sprint from Newport, Rhode Island, USA to Cardiff as part of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Ms Caffari, who is an MBE, is no stranger to ocean racing, having competed in the Vendée Globe, the Global Challenge, the Barcelona World Race and four transatlantic races.

But she has also sailed around the world three times, the only woman to have done so, including westwards, against the winds and currents.

The record holder is making her debut as skipper in the Volvo Ocean Race, one of the toughest in the world. The group set off yesterday (Sunday) and are expected to arrive in the Welsh capital this Sunday.

Ms Caffari, a former St Clement Danes pupil, has previously appeared in the race as part of the all female Team SCA in 2014/15.

She will skipper the Turn the Tide on Plastic boat.
