During the early May bank holiday many people were rather unpleasantly reminded that Cassiobury Park has a major car parking problem.

The “triangle” area near Watford Met station seems to suffer the most, with chaotic street parking and limited or no access for emergency vehicles.

There may be no complete solution, but there is one initiative which would certainly alleviate this problem – simply encourage visitors to make greater use of the extensive street parking on the Cassiobury housing estate, on the other side of the park from the triangle.

The total length of this area’s avenues, crescents etc must run to several miles. Cassiobury Drive alone is one of the longest roads in the area, with space for hundreds of cars. The estate’s roads are also wide enough to permit parking without impeding traffic flow, and the residents have plenty of private off-street parking in the gardens of their large houses.

Could it be that this obvious solution has not been implemented because local politicians are reluctant to confront the battalions of lawyers, doctors, business people, senior civil servants, and other members of the loud-voiced and sharp-elbowed metropolitan elite who reside in these large houses?

Perish the thought, but maybe Messrs Jeffree and Kloss and Ms Steele, the Park ward councillors, are pondering whether support for such a parking initiative would be merely a brave decision (loses votes) or a courageous one (loses elections).
