Travellers have moved into a park.

Caravans were spotted making their way into King George Recreation Ground in Bushey on Friday.

They have been parked right next to the children's play park.

The caravans have moved from land opposite Golf Close after a removal order was served on eight caravans on Friday morning by Hertsmere Borough Council.

A witness says she saw people kicking down a wooden bollard which allowed the caravans to get into King George.

The woman, who does not want to be named, said: "I was walking into the park from Chiltern Avenue when I heard the sound of loud engines and all of a sudden a group of caravans came past. I could see some men kicking something and then realised it was a bollard.

"I rang the police straight away and they were here within minutes."

Council officers have now served a notice of direction requiring them to leave and if they do not, another removal order will be served.

The process could take up to five days to complete.

Cllr Seamus Quilty, responsible for the environment, said: “Our officers have responded to these incursions as promptly as they can within the parameters of the law.

“Soon after their arrival at Golf Close, our officers visited to conduct checks and issued a notice of direction, requesting the group to leave the area. This resulted in a removal order being obtained from court as the travellers had remained at the site, which was served this morning.

“It is regrettable that they have now moved on to another site in the Hertsmere borough, so we will need to begin the legislative process again.

“This can take up to five days to complete, subject to court availability. We have moved as quickly as we can to secure the necessary approvals."

King George Recreation Ground is the main park in Bushey and received Green Flag status in 1999.

Watford Borough Council is also aware of travellers staying illegally on land near Wiggenhall Road.
