Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor joined cyclists as they urged for better safety on the roads.

He joined members of the Watford Velo Sport and Watford Cycle Hub as they toured the area.

It comes after Andy Macpherson, a member of Watford Velo Club, said he was “very helpful.”

He said: “We felt a need to highlight cycling safety issues with the Mayor.

“He was very helpful, is committed to encouraging cycling and to raising awareness.

“It was a rewarding meeting. We want to raise concerns regarding recent incidents and near misses on our roads.

“We asked the Mayor to make a commitment to raising awareness of the need to make our roads safer and for him to look at poster or media campaigns to highlight the dangers posed to cyclists on the roads.”

The mayor has shown full support for raising awareness about road safety and has been liasing with the county council to decide what can be done.

Andy said: “We need drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to be more tolerant and sometimes less aggressive.

“We all make mistakes.

“Unfortunately, if a car hits a bike there is only one winner.”

Watford Mayor Peter Taylor said: "It was great to join Watford cyclists to go around the town seeing how we can make Watford a more friendly place for cyclists and pedestrians.

"We looked at how we can make routes safer for bikes and how we can make motorists and cyclists more considerate of each other.

"One of my commitments to you as Mayor is to make Watford a more cycle friendly town.

"If you have any suggestions about how I can help with that, do get in touch at themayor@watford.gov.uk"
