An grandad is hoping to get plenty of satisfaction when he attends a Rolling Stones concert – 50 years after he last saw the band.

Grandad-of-two Mike Jackson, 70, from Oxhey, will see the Stones at Twickenham Stadium tonight (June 19) and has paid £142.49 for the privilege.

Back in October 1964, when he saw the band at the Gaumont Cinema, in Watford High Street (opposite Gade House where Rileys Snooker Hall now stands) he paid five shillings and six pence (27.5p in new money).

Back then he was a 16-year-old schoolboy at St. Albans Grammar. He paid for his ticket out of his earnings from his part-time job at Woolworths on Watford High Street.

He said: “I can remember the concert clearly with the Rolling Stones belting out their No 1 hit at the time ‘It’s all over now.’

“Unfortunately there was pandemonium in the cinema with girls screaming and the only way to see the stage was to stand on the arm rests of the seats. I won’t be doing that tonight!”

Mike, a retired union official, who is chairman of Watford Labour Party, said the Stones had become role models for the older generation. He said: “They’re still going strong even though they don’t need to as they’re all millionaires, but they’re doing it because they love music, and so do I.

“You have a new life after you retire. I think a lot of people look back and wonder how they ever had time for work.”

In 1964, at the start of their careers, the Stones toured the UK four times. Mike also remembers seeing Dave Berry and the Mojos as well as Charlie and Inez Foxx.
