A time capsule with drawings and messages from children have been buried in the new multi-million pound extension to a shopping centre.

Over 150 children were invited on Mother’s Day to draw and write messages for the time capsule along with pictures of the construction crew and staff at the intu shopping centre.

Watford’s Deputy Mayor Karen Collett buried the time capsule with Leigh Brooks the marketing manager at intu in the middle of the new 180 million pound extension.

Watford Observer:

She said: “I have come here on behalf of the mayor and as deputy mayor because young people are my passion.

“Seeing what the children were writing and drawing on Mother’s Day about the future and of intu and Watford leaves me over excited.

“In the time capsule we have pictures of Watford in the 1960s, the construction with the different phases and the staff.”

The deputy mayor gave her thanks to the workers on site and gave her views on what the extension will mean to the town.

She added: “I would like to thank the contractors and everybody in the centre management for what they have done.

“It’s going to create so many new jobs in Watford.

Watford Observer:

“Watford’s been waiting for this for a long time whereas other towns don’t have this much going on.

“I know people have been inconvenienced but we’re gaining a great big shopping development.

“Watford’s outside of London and people want to come here, to shop here and to live here.

“This is about the future.”

Watford Observer:

Some of the messages in the time capsule were of excitement on what the next few centuries could bring, some were also about the centre's new cinema and bowling alley.

One message read: “I think, in 100 years we will all be able to beam to intu Watford and no one will have to drive here anymore.”

Another read: “I can’t wait to go to the new cinema and watch Peter Rabbit.”

Although some messages also expressed a wish for the extension to be even bigger.

“Can we make intu Watford even bigger?

“I want a giant games area.”
