A class at a school managed to raise £1,000 for charity through a scheme that encourages young students to give back to their community.

Year 9 at Rickmansworth School took part in the First Give program which is sponsored by shopping centre owner intu and encourages pupils to dedicate their time and effort to raise money chosen charities.

Students created presentations about their charity and classes planned and carried out raising awareness and fundraising activities for their chosen cause.

A total of 30 Year 9 finalists took part in the school final event on July 4.

Seven teams delivered presentations about their charity and class’s work to their year and a panel of judges.

The winning team secured a donation to the Huntington’s Disease Association of £1,000.

Huntingdon's Disease is an inherited disorder that attacks the brain, causing progressive loss of movement and mental abilities.

Alexander Nicoll, corporate responsibility director at intu, said: "I am in awe of the responses from the teams of students who have researched a charity of their choice and made a pitch on behalf of the good cause at the Final event. The standard of presentation is always high and the stories told are often compelling and personal to the young people themselves.

“The winners this time, raising awareness about Huntington's Disease, chose it because a member of the class had a personal connection to the illness. I offer my congratulations to the winning team and to everyone at First Give who worked so hard to help the students deliver these powerful messages."

Rickmansworth School is just one of 140 Greater London schools taking part in the First Give programme.
