A councillor has warned that an already “densely populated” area is at risk of being “crammed” after proposals were put forward to build hundreds of new flats.

A developer held an exhibition last month which revealed flats could be built on the current TK Maxx and The Range site in St Albans Road in Watford.

The development could be part of the Watford Junction masterplan, which will see a major regeneration of the St Albans Road area.

Labour county councillor for North Watford, Cllr Asif Khan, is concerned about “cramming” too many flats into a small space.

He said: “I’m really concerned. There are a number of impacts we have to consider for people who already live here such as infrastructure. If this goes ahead, there has to be green space, a doctor’s surgery, and a solution to the parking problem which at the moment is scary.

“We are cramming here, and perhaps the council could be more robust when it comes to making a decision on these applications.

“People must respond to the consultation that has been put forward but it is important that the developers value the comments and listen to them.”

Lib Dem councillor Ian Stotesbury, who represents Callowland where the retail park lies, says the council is under pressure to provide new homes and echoes Cllr Khan’s comments that people must get involved in the consultation.

He said: “Redevelopment should not be feared but it is vital the right infrastructure is provided. But we need input from residents. We are aiming for a community development so talk to us, and talk to the developers.”

Berkeley Homes has not confirmed full details of the number of homes or what would be built on the site.

Managing director John Sanders said: “We are delighted to be working in Watford. We want to involve as many local residents, community groups, businesses and elected representatives as possible in our proposals for 94-98 St Albans Road.

“We are currently at a very early stage in the design process, and are committed to supporting the council’s vision for the masterplan, which includes benefits for the whole community.”
