Crowds did not let the small matter of England in the World Cup stop them supporting their community.

Hundreds attended the annual Courtlands Family Fun day at Goodwood Recreation ground on July 7.

Star Wars was the theme for the event, and visitors were greeted by a real life Darth Vader with resident Jeff Collette donning the infamous costume and local children acting out the role of his stormtroopers.

More than 20 stall holders sold wares or provided information and advice.

In the arena, musical entertainment was provided by Zero City Band, who wowed the crowd with classic rock. Spectators were encouraged to sing along to some popular tunes with two local ladies better known as Midnite Duo.

More than 130 performers from children and adult groups including Celtic Hearts Irish Dancers and Trinity Performing Arts provided some fabulous dance theatre.

Events in the arena were rounded off by talented youngsters from the Music Gym who gave the crowd a great finale.

In its 11th year, the Courtland’s Family Fun Day is organised by the Courtlands Residents Association.

Trish Froy, secretary of the Courtlands Residents Association, said: "This was an amazing event and we’re very grateful to all those who took part and all those who attended, particularly given how hot it was on the day and the distractions of the England game.

"We’re delighted that we raised more than £1,100 which will be used to support other projects for our local residents."

Vice-chairman Dan Holden said: "This event demonstrates just how valuable residents associations can be in their local community. This has been a big team effort and I’m grateful for the contributions of all of those involved."
