Enfield enjoyed a successful President's Day, beating Winchmore Hill by seven wickets at a blustery Lincoln Road on Saturday.

After the disappointing performance at Eastcote the previous week, it was important that Enfield bounced back, and a local derby at home in front of a crowd of 150 vice-presidents and guests afforded a good opportunity to do just that.

Captain Kyal Bacchus-Brown won the toss and invited Winchmore to bat first.

The game started in spectacular style with a wicket falling to a run-out from the very first ball. After that Enfield made steady inroads into the opposition batting line-up, with Tom Bolt once again bowling well. And when Faisal Mir took two wickets in two balls, the second a one-handed grab by Jack Plumb behind the stumps, the innings was in disarray at 59-5.

However, Winchmore opener Jim Gatting, having been dropped early in his innings, was still at the crease and playing well. He received support from Charlie Avent and then put on 58 for the seventh wicket with his captain Sasha Selveratnum (31) as the score inched upwards towards a reasonable total.

Gatting was the last wicket to fall, well caught in the deep by Sam Smyth from the bowling of Dan Amedee, having made an excellent 113 and propelled his team’s score to respectability.

The Hill innings closed on 201 all out from 42.1 overs. Enfield’s leading wicket-taker Amedee (3-42) continued his fine season, with good support from Bolt (3-57) and Mir (2-38).

Enfield’s response began without any real alarms as the watchful Plumb and flamboyant Les Edwards added 79 for the first wicket, before Plumb was well caught by Mitchell Todd at mid-on. Rehan Hassan then drove uppishly to cover but Edwards and Australian Smyth (27 not out) combined well to keep Enfield in total control.

Edwards eventually fell, caught by Selveratnum off the bowling of Chris Chapman, for a powerfully-struck 116 which he amassed from just 99 deliveries. This was Edwards’ fourth century of a productive season so far.

Fittingly it was then left to Bacchus-Brown to hit the winning runs as Enfield cruised to 205-3, winning with 17 overs to spare to remain second in Middlesex League Division Two ahead of this weekend's trip to third-placed Harrow St Mary’s.
