A campaign to get a safer pedestrian crossing has paid off after the county council agreed to install four new dropped kerbs.

Following a redesign at the junction of Dalton Way and Lower High Street, near Watford Arches, in February, cyclists and people with buggies and wheelchairs complained that they were no longer to able cross Dalton Way easily.

County councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst, who represents Central Watford and Oxhey, put pressure on Hertfordshire Council to reinstall dropped kerbs and they have agreed to his wishes.

Works have also been planned to widen Dalton Way outside the Seat garage in the direction of Bushey Arches. This is as a result of “a number” of wing mirrors being clipped.

No timeframe has been given for either of the works but Cllr Giles-Medhurst has pressed for it to be done “as soon as possible”.

He said: "I am pleased to have been supported in my efforts by SPOKES (a cycling group) and two local residents groups; Oxhey Village Environment Group and Watford Fields Residents' Association. We managed to force the county council to carry out a safety audit and when that failed to take account of the loss of the cycling and pedestrian route I organised a number of meetings with senior officers to convince them that taking away this clear pedestrian and cyclist desired route was stupid.

“I am pleased that they have listened.”

There will be no change in the traffic signal operation so when each phase is red it will be safe to cross the junction in two movements.
