A father-of-two has warned it is only "a matter of time" before tragedy strikes on a busy Watford road, following the sixth crash in 18 months to blight his home.

Roy Hayes, of Lady's Close, is now calling for heightened speed restrictions along Exchange Road, more commonly known as the ring road, before someone is killed.

He said: "It has to be one of the most dangerous roads in Watford, if not the most dangerous road in Watford.

"Amazingly no one has been seriously injured in any of these crashes. It's nothing short of a miracle."

Mr Hayes, 48, lives with his wife, Andrea, 42, and two children, Georgia, six, and Alex, four, inside a gated cul-de-sac where his house borders the ring road.

However, he now refuses to let his children, who attend Field Infant School in Neal Street, play in the front garden for fear another motorist could hit the large concrete wall separating his home from three lanes of traffic.

In the latest smash a blue Peugeot 306 convertible hit the wall opposite King Street and caused a six foot concrete slab to fly across Mr Hayes' garden.

Mr Hayes complained to Hertfordshire Highways and police, who told him they do not keep records of crashes unless there is an injury or fatality.

Councillor Sheila Smillie, who represents Central ward, said: "We have got to do something. It looks like a war zone. You can see the battle scars from all the different accidents that have happened there."
