David Law, the man in charge of Watford General Hospital for the past three years, has resigned as chief executive of West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The announcement, in a statement released at 5.45pm today, followed calls for his resignation by Watford MP Claire Ward and Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning, after the publication of a Healthcare Commission report that rated the Trust as 'weak'.

It also ranked the Trust as one of the worst performing in the country.

Mr Law said: "It is with great regret that I resign from the Trust. My time here has been challenging but I think I leave the Trust in a better position than I found it.

"It is only right though that the responsibility for failings identified by the Healthcare Commission falls on the Chief Executive. I look forward to a bright future for the patients and staff of this Trust and I will miss the people and the place."

Professor Thomas Hanahoe, chairman said: "David Law has played a vital part in moving the Trust forward over the last three years but I respect his decision to stand down in the face of the latest results from the Healthcare Commission which gave the Trust a weak' rating for both use of resources and quality of services.

"It is in keeping with the character of the man that despite all his successes as Chief Executive he felt it was right that he should be the one to be held to account for any failings identified by the Healthcare Commission.

"During his three years leading our Trust he delivered the Elective Care Centre in St Albans; he developed the new Acute Admissions Unit; he pushed toward the future on the new Watford Health Campus whilst, for the first time in the Trust's history, he moved us from £26m in debt to a projected £5m surplus this year.

"These positive changes will bring benefits for patients, now and in the future, and for that we thank David. However, he recognised that new leadership is needed so that we can deal with the criticisms of the Healthcare Commission with the support and confidence of staff and patients."

David Law, resigns at what price? One hopes all bonus payments severance payments are forfeited! Again one calls for an EGM of the trust ?

Patronising and badly dressed bureaucrat. I am still smarting from the shambolic administrative treatment I received a month ago when I attended the Day Clinic by appointment only to be told that a) I didn't exist, b) if I did, I would have to go to St Albans for my Op. and c) it would be at least three months before I would be next contacted...

This is the honourable thing to do. He obviously has integrity. Its a shame more public servants who fail don't resign or better still get dismissed.

I wonder if the actual hospital managers who on a day to day basis have been responsible for the poor performance will have as much integrity. I doubt it. Don't hold your breath waiting for their resignations. I hope the new Chief Executive will sack the incompetents, but I won't hold my breath.

It is an honourable decision to resign - the reason that you wont see 'managers' also falling on their sword is many of them will be 'seconded' into new positions and also David Law will get a huge severance package and any run of the mill manager would simply have to work their notice and naff off empty handed. Those who they feel were key to the failure will be moved sideways into quieter positions.

Can the Watford Observer please go into Watford Hospital and take pictures of some of the dirt and grime.Every time I attend this place I see such things as bags full of soiled bedclothes blood stains on the walls filthy air conditioning vents. The place is a health hazard and should be closed until it meets hygeine standards.

Thank god he's gone. He has closed and destroyed so much of our services, we now need Tom Hanahoe OUT and the rest of the destructive Trust.
David Law, Hatchet Man, has gone now because he's done his intended job. All I can say is the next trust he goes to should watch out, because he's there to do a job with a very large axe.

TOM HANAHOE OUT NOW !
