The controversial traffic scheme at Junction 19 of the M25 is to be scrapped.

Watford MP Claire Ward announced today that the scheme - which angered motorists who claimed it made conjestion worse - will be axed.

The Watford Observer campaigned for the removal of the scheme and back in June handed a petition to then Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman signed by 485 readers.

Drivers had argued the changes have also had a negative impact on local roads, as drivers are using smaller roads to avoid the Juntion 19 changes.

MP Ward said she too had received hundreds of complaints about the major traffic jams being caused by the scheme which reduced sliproad traffic onto the motorway at the Hunton Bridge roundabout to one lane.

She said today that she had been told by Transport Minister, Tom Harris, that he had decided to drop the scheme.

In doing so he has gone against the advice of the Highways Agency which wanted the scheme to be made permanent in order to improve traffic flow on the motorway.

The Minister said that the scheme could be considered again in two years time when consultations take place about a further widening of the M25.

Miss Ward said it was hoped that the road cones restricting traffic flow would be removed either by Christmas or early in the New Year.

She said: "This is a victory for commonsense. It was obvious from a recent survey of more than 600 drivers and local residents that most people thought the scheme was 'completely stupid' resulting in major traffic jams across Watford. "The Highways Agency seemed to be riding rough-shod over the concerns raised by my constituents and there was no way that I was going to let that happen."

Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Watford Sal Brinton welcomed the move, but asked why it had taken so long to scrap the scheme. She said: "Whilst we are all delighted that the scheme will go - and we hope by Christmas, one has to wonder why its taken our MP so long to lobby the government on this and for the government to decide, some five months after a minister visits, that it must go."As a local Watford resident who uses this junction regularly it been almost a year of hell for many drivers."The end of this floored scheme could not come soon enough."Have your say on this story by filling out the form below.

Well this is a victory for common sense at long last - makes all the emails and calls worth it - I certainly feel a sense of achievement that I have played my small part in this. Can't see why it will take so long though to remove these cones - why do we have to wait till the New Year - is this just petulance on the part of the Highways Agency? Can't wait to get back to a two lane slip raod.

Let's be honest, the local liberals took this issue up months ago,(councilor Giles Medhurst) then when it becomes huge, Clare Ward jumps on the bandwagon.

If the Transport Minister can decide to drop the scheme, then obviously it was in his power not to have the scheme in the first place - and he may still bring it back in a couple of years time!

This is great news and I agree a victory for common sense for a change. It's certainly that case that many people have been lobbying the Highways Agency about this misguided and foolhardy scheme over the last few months. From members of the public such as Val Bird (above) and myself to local and county councillors and the Mayor as well as Claire Ward. I am sure she would not be so churlish as to take all the credit for this victory for herself.
I too hope that the dreaded cones are removed soon. If this hasn't happened by Christmas Day I would be happy to go down there and do it myself. It would beat slaving over a hot turkey. Anyone care to join me!!??

I am with 'Auntie' above. Do your bit to reduce congestion on Britain's roads. Remove Highways Agency Cones from Watford! Honestly, how long will it take?

I was wondering this morning as I passed the dreaded cones why it will take so long to remove them. I can't see it would take a couple of Hghways agency workers more than a couple of hours to do this.

Is the Highways Agency sulking over its failed plan? It seems very childish but then again the fiasco seemed to have been devised by a two year old scribbling with a crayon (sorry that's an insult to two year olds but you know what I mean!)

Oh dear, I will have to send my dear friends at the Highways Agency another email - just when they thought they'd never hear from me again!

The Highways Agency has informed me that the cones will be removed this Thursday! This after I offered to send some students down to remove the cones - they like to furnish their digs with them I hear!

What a waste of funds, time and effort.
Lets face it the Highways Agency seems to have little knowledge of the use of Highways. The tin pot elf' n 'safety boys got it wrong big time. Now they just need to learn how to turn off their motorway gantry signs that are 80% incorrect 90% of the time.
