A sinkhole has opened up in a residential road in Watford.

The road surface next to a kerb in Queens Avenue by Princes Avenue collapsed on Monday, August 16.

Pictures taken by Holywell councillor Matthew Turmaine shows the opening in the tarmac, which has now been cordoned off.

Cllr Turmaine says he first noticed a slight dip in the road by the kerb on Monday morning.

But he said that during the afternoon he was informed by a neighbour that it had become a sinkhole.

He said: “It’s big, it's around 30-40cm long by about 20cm wide.

“It’s sizeable and it's definitely risky for cyclists and pedestrians.”

Cllr Turmaine added that he reported the sinkhole to Hertfordshire Highways.

Hertfordshire County Council says its Ringway’s team attended the scene last night and made the scene safe.

A council spokesperson said: “They are currently investigating the cause and will begin excavation at some point later this week.”
