Northwood centenarian Kathleen Clifton sums up her longevity in just two words: "hard work".

Mrs Clifton, who lives at the Northwood Nursing Home, celebrated her 100th birthday with a visit from friends, family, and even Three Rivers Council Chairman Amrit Mediratta.

Born in Margate, Mrs Clifton, the daughter of a teacher, excelled at school and later went on to study at university in London - a very rare achievment at the time - before starting work as a medicine dispenser and later a nurse.

A bright pupil, she remembers school with fondness.

She said: "I started school in Leicester when I was 10. I remember it well. I was at the girls school and there was a boys school next. I remember we were not allowed to mix with the boys at all.

"The head mistress, Mrs Wellman, was very strict. She kept us all in line so we didn't misbehave."

John Subandrio, 24, a care worker at the home, was thrilled that Kathleen had reached her milestone birthday.

He said: "She does so much she puts some of us younger people to shame.

"I think if you keep yourself physically and mentally active and have a good sense of humour, you too can live to 100."

Kathleen's close friend for nearly 60 years, Iris Martin, added: "Kathleen has been though two world wars and when she was born there weren't even any cars on the road. Even though she can't do some of the things she used to do, I've seen her painting and it is very good."

Council Chairman Cllr Mediratta said: "I spent quite some time talking to Kathleen. I was amazed how alert she is.

"When she saw the Queen's signature on the card she remarked, she has such nice handwriting'."

Her birthday was on January 2, but her celebration was delayed until this week.
