A bus driver suffered life-changing injuries after a crash in Hertfordshire that also injured 11 passengers.

Emergency services including an air ambulance rushed to the collision in Luton Road, near Harpenden, at 4.20pm on Saturday (April 9).

Police said the bus driver, a man in his 60s, was seriously hurt after the collision with a BMW while the 11 bus passengers suffered minor injuries.

A 28-year-old from St Albans has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while under the influence of drugs.

He has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Harpenden Fire station posted on Facebook that the crash happened near the junction with Cooters End Lane and posted photos which showed some of the damage to the bus, as well as the helicopter and firefighters at the scene.

The bus involved was a 321 service, which runs between Luton and Watford. This particular bus was heading towards Luton.

Arriva said its thoughts are with their driver and thanked those who helped at the scene.

The company added it is supporting a police investigation into the collision, with Hertfordshire Constabulary issuing a public appeal for information.

Sergeant Justin Smyth, of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit, said: "I’d like to hear from anyone who has dash cam footage or who witnessed this incident or events leading up to it.

"I would like to pass on my thanks to local residents near the incident for their assistance at the scene as they helped with triage locations and assisting the injured."
