A drug dealer must pay £11,000 within a fortnight or go to prison for eight months.

Police found around a kilo of cannabis and more than £4,000 cash at the home of 23-year old Matthew Bedford, of Kindersley Way, Abbots Langley, after a search warrant was executed on March 27, last year. The police also found other evidence of drug dealing, including scales and a list of names.

The find came about after the unemployed man was stopped by police in his car in Woodland Way, Watford. Officers smelt cannabis and Bedford was ordered out of the car and a search uncovered five bags of herbal cannabis and £190 in cash.

Bedford was taken to Watford Police Station where he made a no comment interview.

He later pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and possession of cannabis resin with intent to supply and possession of criminal property, namely £4,260 found at his home.

At St Albans Crown Court in September the judge imposed a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years, along with 200 hours unpaid work and a six-month night-time curfew.

Bedford was back at the same court on Tuesday for a confiscation hearing.

Judge Michael Baker ordered Bedford - who by coincidence lives in the road as the Three Rivers District councillor of the same name, but is no relation - to pay a total of £11,047.
