More than 160 children were evacuated from a Watford infant school today.
Three fire crews were called to Field Infants School and Nursery, Neal Street, around 3pm, after a faulty heater filled the school with smoke.
Nobody was injured but the school will be closed tomorrow while engineers fix the problem.
Headteacher Elizabeth Griffiths said: "The children were all out of the building in two minutes and all acted very calmly.
"I'm very proud of them all."
The enforced day's holiday left many children disappointed as they were supposed to dress as book characters on Friday as part of celebrations for the National Year of Reading.
