The opening of a football pitch will help build community spirit and enable children to be taught new team skills.

Abbots Langley PCSO Wesley Gullin will provide structured lessons on the new pitch in Cheshire Drive, in Leavesden.

He said: "We have done a lot of work to remove thorns and shrubs on the playing field.

"We are just finishing off the final touches. Once it is all grassy it will be a really good area to play football.

"The children round here used to play football in the road, and we were constantly getting complaints from people about it, because they worried that the kids were a danger to themselves and drivers."

A raffle was held to raise money for equipment, including bibs, which will also be used to teach cycling proficiency by a fellow PCSO. It raised £237.

PCSO Gullin explained residents in the area are happy with the work they have carried out, and that some of the children were involved in the preparation of the pitch.
