Two men have been arrested on suspicion of theft after a long police chase ended in a crash.

Herts Police had been called at around 12.54am on Wednesday (September 27) following reports of several tools being taken after a van in Park Street, St Albans, was broken into.

A silver Vauxhall Astra, suspected of having cloned number plates, was then reportedly driven off from the scene, police said, leading to a pursuit by road policing unit officers.

After failing to stop, the Vauxhall eventually crashed in Ruislip and, after suspected stolen tools were discovered in the car, two men were arrested.

A 25-year-old man from Swinton, Greater Manchester, was arrested on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle.

A 19-year-old man from West Drayton, Middlesex, was arrested on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle and driving a motor vehicle dangerously.

Both have been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

The Beds, Cambs, and Herts Road Policing Unit shared a photo of the result of the crash at 3.02am. A significant chunk of the front-right of the vehicle had been destroyed after it appeared to have hit a metal post.

Herts Police confirmed no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
