Crime down over Christmas period

11:38am Thursday 4th January 2001

CRIME was down 30 per cent in Gravesham and Dartford over Christmas, according to a senior police officer.

Chief of staff for north Kent Sergeant Rod Chapman said the festive period was particularly quiet.

Sgt Chapman said: Christmas does tend to be quiet because people are at home, but this year was particularly quiet.

What happens is, crime rises at the beginning of December and drops just before Christmas.

He explained the number of police initiatives have also helped to reduce crime.

Sgt Chapman added: I want to encourage residents to leave a radio or light on if they go out.

This would lead burglars to believe there is somebody at home.
