: London, Febuary 28th: This is a list of the worst rail accidents in the UK:

February 28, 2001: A GNER York to London King's Cross today crashed at Great Heck, North Yorkshire, on the East Coast main line. At least 15 people dead.

October 17, 2000: Four killed when a GNER London to Leeds train derailed at Hatfield, Herts.

October 5, 1999: Thirty one people killed when two trains collided at Ladbroke Grove, just outside Paddington station, London. September 19, 1997: Swansea to Paddington express crashed into freight train at Southall, west London, killing seven people.

August 8, 1996: One dead, 69 injured when train collided with a stationary passenger train at Watford South Junction, Herts.

January 31, 1995: A guard killed and 30 people injured in an accident at Aisgill on the Settle to Carlisle line.

October 1994: Five killed and 12 injured in a head-on crash near Cowden in Kent.

December 1991: More than 100 people injured when two trains collide in tunnel beneath the River Severn.

March 1989: Five people died when two trains collided outside Purley station, south London.

March 1989: Two killed when two trains in Glasgow collided head-on.

December 12, 1988: Thirty five people killed in rush hour crash at Clapham Junction, south London.

October 1987: Four people died after train falls into the swollen River Towy in Wales after the rail bridge collapsed.

July 26, 1986: Nine people were killed when passenger train hit a van on a level crossing at Lockington, East Yorkshire.

October 1979: Five killed when two trains collide at Invergowrie, Scotland.

February 1975: Train hits the end of a cul-de-sac tunnel at Moorgate Underground station in central London killing 43 people.

June 1975: Two trains collided at Nuneaton station, Warwicks, killing six people.

December 1973: Ten killed when a train derailed in Ealing, west London.
