South West Herts MP David Gauke has slammed a government “tax grab” that could leave thousands of pensioners out-of-pocket next year.

Officials at HM Revenue and Customs announced this week that pension tax rules had not been properly applied, leaving a £135 million-a-year blackhole in its finances.

From next year, the department added it will start to claw up to £320 a year from pensioners who may have benefited from the error.

Mr Gauke, Conservative Treasury spokesman, said: “This is a tax grab - another example of the Government incompetence with HMRC getting its sums wrong and expecting pensioners to foot the bill.”

David seem's quite a nice chap for a Tory.
Shame he didn't bother to vote on the ammendment to the Planning bill, which could have made it more difficult to put up Telecoms masts without planning permission. Nice to see him supporting the pensioners, but what about the rest of us.
