MP slams "hypocritial" Lib Dems

Watford MP Claire Ward has launched a scathing attack on the town’s “two-faced” Liberal Democrats for their “hypocritical” response to proposed post office closures.

Branches in Bushey Mill Lane, Queens Road and Leavesden Road are among 41 to face the axe across Buckinghamshire, South Hertfordshire and South Essex, as part of the company’s plan to shut 2,500 outlets across the country.

The announcement four weeks ago led to protests by Liberal Democrat councillors and supporters outside the Bushey Mill Lane outlet.

However, the MP has now claimed the Liberal Democrats ignored two invitations to discuss the cut backs, weeks before the proposals were made public, and then launched a campaign against the closures as part of a “cynical public relations exercise” aimed at discrediting the public consultation, which ends on July 28.

Ms Ward said: “This shows just how two-faced the Liberal Democrats are. They were given plenty of opportunity by Royal Mail to object to the proposed closures but hypocritically waited until the public announcement before launching their protest campaign.

“I know that sub post offices perform a valuable service – often for the most vulnerable members of our community – and no one wants to condone closures. I have already asked Royal Mail officials to fully explain the reasons for the closures.

“It seems to me that Watford Council also had plenty of opportunity to put the case for one or two of the sites remaining open, but for purely political reasons decided not to do so. No wonder local politics has got such a bad name.”

However, Sal Brinton, the Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary candidate, claimed Ms Ward knew about the proposals six weeks before they were announced, a fact Ms Ward denies and said she was only told the weekend before the public consultation began.

Ms Brinton said: “She knew which post offices were under threat and was told not to release any information. The rest of us are working completely blind.

“For her to say we were not doing anything about it is a travesty of truth.”

Ms Brinton said her campaign against the closures started in February, when she began collecting petitions, and that she was involved in cross-party talks at Hertfordshire County Council.

She said: “We would restructure the way the Post Office works. It’s got one hand tied behind its back. The Post Office would lose less if it was allowed to do more.

“It’s rich for the only person in Watford who had prior knowledge to say we don’t start campaigning soon enough.”

Watford Mayor Dorothy Thornhill admitted the council had ignored the meetings, but said it did not want to take part in a “sham consultation”.

She said: “We believe it’s a sham consultation but we will fight for what we believe is best for local people, not attend meetings where people try to persuade us it’s the best thing to do.

“That would blunt our sword. We want to campaign on closures that affect our community.”

The post office network lost more than £200 million in 2006/7, and there are four million fewer customer visits every week than two years ago.

A representative said: “Post Office Ltd’s aim is to continue to provide essential services and support retail businesses and the local economy in as many communities as possible, subject to the minimum access criteria set by the Government.”

She knew long before anybody what POs were to close in Watford. As usual she sat on her backside, brown nosed the government and failed Watford.

What's going on ? Our MP making a comment on local issues?. Is John Lewis Closed today?. Whatever Ms Ward says, she is still allowing our post offices to be closed, and she is doing nothing to stop it!.

Another witless comment from "Big Molly" (or is that Cuthbert at it again?) - clearly s/he doesn't understand the thrust of this article. Let me explain, I'll write slowly because it's obvious s/he is not quick in the reading department.

The Post office is losing £500,000 a day. Accordingly the National Government asked local Councils for their in-put regarding potential Sub-post office closures earlier this year.

As usual, Watford Fib Dems wouldn't contribute so, apart from the consulting done by Claire Ward off her own bat, Watford Fib Dems ensured that we had no say in any of this because they refused point-blank to participate.

Now as usual they are blaming the Government for what is patently their own failure. Yet more Fib Dem Janus stuff.

No doubt these facts will tie "Big Molly" in knots so s/he will now predictably resort to more personal abuse - watch this space

Igloo wins today's prize for political bias. He should value the liberal freedom to get his bile-filled version of what is happening as regards the opposition to the loss of public ammenities such as the Post Offices. Our MP is stapped by the Government Whip from acting vigourosly in the interests of her older electorate. Molly is quite correct in this. His bias against the Liberal Democrats is pathetic.

Oh dear - now we've got another Fib Dem stooge. In psycological terms this wish to see your own inner-most feelings in others is known as "projection".

Get real, the only politcal bias on this site is from toadies following the Fib Dem party-line.

The trouble is because of the selfsh actions of Mrs Mugabe and her henchmen older residents of Watford, like me, may well lose out.

Is it not the case that the consultation is still on going. The Lib Dems in my area are campaigning against closure and I had a leaflet from them. Claire Ward says she is against the closures but in a parliametary vote voted against Tory and Lib Dems MPs proposals to retain the post offices.

I do not care who in the end claims credit or not as long as they stay open- Claire Ward should be doing more for Watford not just collecting 100K of our money and funding a second home.

Bernard you seem fond of turkeys, is that why you want the grot hole in Queens Road to stay open - which ones would you close instead - Stiff-Key in Norfolk the only post office for 5 miles? Get real - these sub-post masters get between £25 and £30k a year. The proposed closure sites are seriously under-utilised so they're getting all that money for doing very little. Ask yourself a question Bernard, when was the last time you went into any of these establishments? Apart from somewhere to post e-bay parcels they provide little else in the way of social functions.

You all didn't scream like this when Mrs Mugabe got rid of all Watford's youth workers - all you ever to is hunt for issues to score political points on.

Igloo should pack up, shut up and go to the North pole. He must be pretty frustrated basking on these sunny shores. Shoudn't keep bashing the LD's its the Tories he should be watching out for. He must have forgot what happened last time they were in. (AHAB)

Some folk just cannot take a balanced judgement and I doubt Igloo will move-sadly or shut up. The real issue isn't the opinions of those in the Igloo-world it is about the loss of services on which many persons rely. That is really important and one that politicians and public alike have to have a proper say.

You're almost right Spencer even though you don't live in Watford. How about telling us how the Sarratt Post Office is getting on in all this? I guess you would prefer that the grot hole in Queens Road stayed open and Sarratt's closed.

Get real for a change Lamb Chop

No one "relys" on Queens Road Post Office.

Furthermore the bit that probably chokes you is that it was Downhill Dorothy and her crew who prevented local residents from having a say in all this in the first place.

Having lived in Watford since 1959 I've seen self-opinionated idiots come and go so all you Fib dems are on a loser trying to scare me off here. Mark my words Mrs Mugabe, in due course, will go as they all have.

Each area of SW Herts has the chance to campaign for their own ammenities as I've been trying to discuss today. Lets lat to one side the vanity publishing above this comment. I trust for my area there will be high support for the long-term continuation of Bushey Mill Lane PO since many older people depend on it (despite various governmental acts to let these businesses wither away). Such acts not opposed by one C Ward M.P.

Quite right Tudor. The consultation process regarding potential closures started much earlier this year when the Government requested in-put from local Councils. The Fib Dems in Watford, unlike Lib Dems in other parts of the Country who participated, decided to play politics with the issue. As a result they declined to enter into the consultation process thus disenfrachising the people of Watford.

I understand Claire Ward's office manager sent out hundreds of letters to constiuents in the affected areas seeking their views.

Once these responses are in I have no doubt that Claire Ward will campaign on the basis of those views.

No political spin just hard facts.

Incidentally, Claire Ward was elected on a Labour ticket that's why she doesn't vote with the Fib Dems or the Tories for that matter.

Tudor 247 would you please enlighten us as to exactly which services offered by the PO older people like me depend on?

Loser igloo fails to get it yet again. The only person who knew which POs were scheduled for closure was the MP. She knew weeks before anybody else and is lying if she says otherwise. Why did she do nothing?

I'll answer that question. She is useless.

One of the first signs of low intelligence is answering your own questions Cuthbert. In future, please ensure brain is engaged before opening mouth.

For the record, the question that Big Molly seems incapable of answering is, "please enlighten us as to exactly which services offered by the PO older people like me (Igloo) depend on?"

We all know his/her opinion regarding our MP, which is as s/he well knows, irrelevant.

The information as to which Post Offices were being considered for closure was known by Watford Council back in April this year. This was because the Government asked them for their in-put. Watford Council refused to partake constructively in the consultation process, preferring instead to use the issue as a political football to the detriment of local people.

Just shows you what a bunch of self-centred, egotistical nonces we have running Watford for the time being.

As Big Molly wants us to believe that s/he has a direct line into the Town Hall, perhaps she might give us the low down the inescapable fact that the Mayor appears to have granted free use of the Colliseum in 2007 and 2008, losing us council tax payers £6000 in revenue, to the same mob of Moonies who paid for her jolly to Israel last year - nice bit of quid-pro-quo don't you think?

This woman is also handing out hand written commercial endorsements on official Watford Council Mayoral headed note-paper, completely contrary to all conduct codes. I wonder, does she get a bit of quid-pro-quo for that too?

Doubtless Big Molly is incapable of providing pertinent answers and will succumb to his/her usual witless slagging. Plus ca change

Igloo tells us that 'Claire Ward was elected on a Labour ticket that's why she doesn't vote with the Fib Dems or the Tories'.

So actually Ms Ward's excuse is not that she really wanted to shut Post Offices, but that she had to vote in the opposite way to the LibDems?

What a fascinating way to decide how to vote!

Igloo, Watford says...
8:24pm Tue 22 Jul 08

Well Louise you seem to know everything like you other Fib Dem friend Big Mol.

Instead of playing political football in true Fib Dem style why not come up with answers for a change.

Why didn't Downhill Dorothy participate in the consultation process when invited to do so?

What's the Lib Dems' solution to the £500,000 a day losses the Post office are taking on their Sub-branch network?

I have documentary proof of everything I write here so it's time to put up or shut up Louise

Igloo, Watford says...
8:33pm Tue 22 Jul 08

I know that Watford Fib Dems think they run everything but it's the Government which sets the agendas in Parliament. Parties either vote with them or against them as they run things. Hence its' the Fibs and the Tories who vote against things.

Perhaps Louise hasn't noticed but the Liberals were booted out of power nearly 90 years ago - not without good reason. but then she wouldn't notice this inconvenient truth would she? Is that because she's a Fib Dem?

The consultataion about closures in Watford started only a few weeks ago, except Ward knew long before which POs were down for closure. In her usual lazy arsed way she did nothing. Loser igloo is wrong again.

Igloo, your comments say it all. Claire Ward is elected to represent Waford residents and vote for what is best for them. Instead she represents this failing Labour government and votes whatever way she is told.

What a farce!
