A Watford school has lavished praise on its sports teams, during its annual presentation evening.

Westfield Community Technology College, in Tolpits Lane, toasted a year of sporting achievement with an audience of 262 students and parents, during the event on Tuesday, July 15.

Amongst the successes that were celebrated were: • The Under-19 Boys' Basketball team made it to the last sixteen of the National Competition.

• The Under-16 Boys' Basketball team reached the county final.

• In Boys' Football, the Year 9 and 11 teams both made the District finals with the Year 11s winning the competition.

• The Under-12 Girls Football team made the semi-finals of the County Cup.

• In Netball the Year 8 and 9 squads achieved runners up in the District tournament and the Year 11 team won their rally.

Guest Speaker on the night was Steve Palmer, the former Watford FC player.

In addition, many trophies were given out on the night, among them the U19 Boys' Basketball team for achieving the Team of the Year and student Michael Burke achieving Sports Personality of the Year

Good to see a school that encourages sport and wants its pupils to be winners in an era where some loony headteachers are banning games on the absurd grounds that competition is bad for kids. Either that or the healthy & safety Nazis have decreed that egg-and-spoon races and sack races are too dangerous because the poor little souls might fall over and sprain an ankle!

I agree wholeheartedly with the solid well established core values so elequently expressed by Roy Stockdill. Sport generates a knowledge of fair play and coming second (or losing) makes a young person stronger and encourages another attempt. Well done Westfield School and more power to your pen Roy Stockdill (where are your blogs these days?)

Roy, you are talking right out of your hat once again. What do you know about Health & Safety, nothing. You have a warped impression of anything that doesn't agree with your extreme views.
A certain amount of competition is good for everyone, but some people seem to think that winning is everything, and if you come second you are a looser. I think that taking part is the main criteria, winning is the icing on the cake.
