A man set up a stall in a busy South Oxhey shopping parade, shouted that all Muslims were terrorists and called for their execution, a court has heard.

Kevin Quinn is alleged to have taken to the streets and used a megaphone to shout racist abuse in an attempt to deliberately stir up race hatred.

A jury at St Albans Crown Court yesterday (Thursday) heard how on Saturday, December 1, last year, the 43-year-old organised a demonstration in South Oxhey.

Along with several members of his British First Party, Quinn set up a stall in The Parade shopping precinct and proceeded to hand out leaflets while shouting his “manifesto” through a loudspeaker.

He shouted that Muslims were “bastards” and “terrorists”, prosecutor Laura Blackman told the court.

She said: “Talking about the Government he referred to Tony Blair as ‘Tony Mohammed’.

“He said that Muslims were suicide bombers and should all be sent home.

“He referred to a case in which an English woman had been arrested in Sudan for naming a teddy bear Mohammed and said, ‘we should be executing the f*****g bastards over here’.

“Witnesses reported hearing him shouting that Muslims were terrorists and Muslims were bastards.”

Ms Blackman told Judge John Plumstead that Quinn, from Bedford, had several leaflets detailing his manifesto on him, as well as Nazi memorabilia and a picture of Adolf Hitler.

Quinn denies one count of religiously aggravated harassment with intent to alarm or distress.

The prosecution called four witness who were in The Parade on December 1, last year.

Faye Wheeler told how she called police because of the rowdy demonstration.

She said: “I was out shopping when I saw these men walking along The Parade.

“They stuck out like a sore thumb. They were dressed in big black coats, as if they were going to a funeral and were carrying a Union Jack.

“In my opinion they were there to stir up racial tension. Someone was on a megaphone, it was used a lot.”

She said Quinn used the microphone to speak about the case of Gillian Gibbons, the teacher who was arrested in Sudan last year for naming a teddy bear Mohammed.

Ms Wheeler told the court: “He said the teacher was in Sudan to teach ‘those retards’ .

“He said something about suicide bombers and then he went on about the cash for questions thing with Tony Blair and said about Mr Levy being Jewish.

“Everything he said was about racism.

“The purpose was to cause racial tension, that was clear.”

She added: “It made me feel very uncomfortable and in the end I called the police.

“I work with disabled children and I was offended by the use of the word “retards” and by all of the racist language that was being used.”

Assistant manager at one of the shops in The Parade, Usman Kabaji, said that he heard the demonstration outside the pet shop where he worked.

He said: “There was a man shouting into the megaphone for about 45 minutes.

“He was talking about a teacher in Sudan and saying all Muslims were terrorists and bastards.

“He said ‘Those bastards should be thrown out – they are taking over our country’.

“It was quite distressing for me. I am a Muslim, but I don’t believe people should speak like that about any religion.

“South Oxhey at the moment is a peaceful area and something like that being said could cause trouble.

“Nobody wants that.”

Quinn’s defence claimed the loudspeaker he used was not working properly and that it may have cut out.

Defending, Mark Kimsey suggested that wind may have meant witnesses misheard what his client was saying.

Responding to this suggestion Mrs Wheeler and Mr Kabaji, as well as two other witnesses from the day, all replied “no” and said that was “absolutely not” true.

Mrs Wheeler replied: “I don’t care what you suggest, I know what I heard and he was being racist and referred to Sudanese children as retards.”

The case continues.
