BNP candidate halts campaign

The British National Party (BNP) candidate for the forthcoming Tudor Ward by-election, Guy Dickens, has withdrawn from the contest.

Although the final date to withdraw, September 24, has passed, he has decided he does not wish to continue the fight to replace Hugh O'Hanlon at Watford Borough Council.

Mr Dickens' agent, Deidre Gates, told the Watford Observer today: "I confirm that Guy Dickens, the British National Party candidate in the Tudor Ward election, does not wish to continue his campaign.

"Guy's wife, Esther, died suddenly and unexpectedly, shortly after the election was called.

"Guy, a courageous man, said he wished to continue nonetheless. However, as the few weeks since then have passed, he finds he cannot contest the election, as he needs private time to grieve."

As a result, all BNP campaigning in Tudor Ward has stopped at Mr Dickens' request, though his name will still appear on the ballot paper.

Voters on October 16 can also choose between Richard Southern (Conservative), Darren Walford (Liberal Democrat), Helen Wynne (Green Party), and Mark Xerri (Labour).

It's a real shame to hear about that, I may not have agreed with his views but it means that there is less choice at the ballot box.

The circumstances are indeed a shame. Otherwise there are times when choice is not all it's cracked up to be.

On a personal level this is very sad. However I think people will still be able to vote for him as his name will be on the ballot paper.
The fact he has stopped campaigning doesn't make any difference.

Bob and Molly are right about the circumstances. But having looked at some of their election material his departure is no loss to the Tudor area.

The point is he hasn't necessarily departed. His name will still be on the ballot paper and unfortunately some people will still vote for him

I auume if Mr Dickens had been doing well he would have stayed in the race. Now he has an excuse when he does badly.

So the pc liberals get what they want, such a shame really as would have been interesting to see just how much public opinion is against the lib/lab/con cartel. If his name is still on the paper i would assume people could still vote, but without campaigning in the all crucial run up week, i fear the residents of Tudor will prob have to carry on with the Lib Dem nightmare we all face here in Watford.

louis,

You should be ashamed of yourself. I hope that if you suffer a bereavement then people will have kinder comments to make during your time of grief than the puerile crassness you have exhibited.

I totally agree Rogman, imagine the uproar and outrage if BNP supporters were saying the same about a lib/dem prospect/Some cold horrible people just cannot get their head round compassion.People like Molly should realise(but fails miserably)that the majority of people in Watford are just not like her.The bloke lost his wife.Maybe its the jittery nerves of flapping libs who worry their popularity on the Tudor has been erroded by a p1ssp0t half baked(well pickled)councillor.I bet a pound to a penny the lib dems do not get back in the tudor.

Hystericool plainly can't read. I said the personal circumstances were sad. In my book that is showing sympathy. Perhaps hystericool is just so anti lib dem he imagines only what he wants to read without actually reading it.

If you keep saying it,maybe you will convince yourself that your human....but you will not convince me luv.One sentence of half hearted sympathy then the killer "however".Your first sentence was written to try to convince everybody else that you gave a **** and you have failed miserably.Surprise,s
urprise anyone who does not agree is automatically prejudiced.Priceless
.You sound too much like that MARE dotty, are you related or is Watford unfortunate to have TWO poisonous old maids? You see a political story,i see a story about a man who has lost his wife.........but then that is the difference between me and you..

Well that just sums up the Tudor for ya.Molly is wringing her knickers worrying the Tudor voters will vote for the BNP even though they havent a candidate.Explains why the Lib Dems are in there
