A SCHOOL in Bushey is appealing for a press for its art pupils.
Head of art at Queens' School Nicola Bettison used a flat-bed etching press during her fine art degree and wants her classes to experiment with the process, known as intaglio.
Intaglio is an old process of engraving and etching.
It is a quick way of reproducing an image and was used by bookmakers for illustrations.
The earliest intaglio prints have been traced back to the 15th Century.
Images are created using metal plates, usually copper or zinc, and the image forms below the surface of the plate.
A paper print is made from the inked metal plate.
As Watford is famous for its links with the printing industry, Ms Bettison is hoping to secure the equipment from a local firm or perhaps a college.
Ideally, the school is looking for a donation as a new press would cost at least £1,500.
However, it would consider buying a second-hand press.
Anyone who can help can telephone the school on 01923 224465.
