Well the credit crunch is turning in to a recession just in time for Christmas – what joy! But will it make any difference to health services?

So far, the government has rejected any suggestions that it is to revisit its plans on health spending, but the cynics may be thinking that as we are making surpluses, it is probably only a matter of time before they put us back under scrutiny. I don’t expect that to be the case any time soon. Of course there are other potential worthy demands on the money - education maybe – but the challenge for us is to keep focussed on improving quality and safety.

I walked round the hospital today and saw a sea of hearts. The Heart of Herts Campaign has really taken hold in the Trust. Just about everywhere you go you see a great big poster that describes 10 “pledges” that our staff have made to patients, covering everything from respect and cleanliness to clear signs and directions. I’m quite proud of the pledges, I think you will be too, but the important thing is that we make every patient experience in our hospitals the best it possibly can be – and we will!

Last but not least, let me tell you what’s happening with our plans to become a Foundation Trust. We have held many public meetings, met with staff and volunteers and even had a film running in the local shopping centres. You may have seen the film, if not click onto the website and watch it - it’s only a minute long. We have already recruited over 1000 members – thank you if you are one of them. Become a Member and Make A Difference. If you want to become member it’s free and easy.
