Six local charities have shared a £2,000 donation from a Rickmansworth supermarket.

The Waitrose Community Matters scheme was launched in August, where each store is handed £1,000 a month split between three good causes.

Every customer who enters the Homestead Road, Rickmansworth branch, is given a green token, no matter how much they spend, and they then put this into a plastic pot under the name of the charity of their choice.

At the end of each month, the tokens are counted and the £1,000 is split by the percentage of tokens awarded to the three charities.

For August, Watford Mencap received £533, Rickmansworth Waterway Trust collected £333, and Rickmansworth Bowls Club was handed £134.

Then for September, Watford New Hope Trust received £234, Springhill Animal Rescue £277, and Keech Cottage Children's Hospice £489.

The nominated charities in October are the Watford and Rickmansworth MS Society, the Croxley British Red Cross and the Shooting Star Children's Hospice. Those for November have yet to be announced.

Sarah White, Waitrose personnel manager, said: "It's a really nice scheme. If you want to nominate a local charity or scheme, come in and fill out a nomination form.

"We've got £12,000 a year to help the community. Help us spend it the right way."
