A SWIMMING club for people with disabilities has celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The Sea Lion Swimming Club was formed in November 1958, and members meet every Saturday evening at Watford Central Leisure Centre.

The club provides a service to people with a disability who are able to enjoy the benefits of swimming in a safe and friendly environment on a regular basis.

It also benefits from a dedicated group of volunteers and helpers who are available to provide assistance and support to all members, in turn offering respite to carers and family members.

The clubs also organises activities outside its weekly swimming session, and on Saturday, November 1, held a party to mark its anniversary at the Kings Langley Community Centre, in The Nap, where Colin West provided the music, Emily Parker sang and Dave Cox entertained the partygoers.

Among the guests were the president of the Sea Lion Swimming Club and chairman of Watford Borough Council, councillor Jan Brown, and her consort, Ian Brown; councillor Ellie Burtenshaw and councillor Alan Burtenshaw; as well as past and present members of the club.

Swimmers from other clubs in Ruislip, Harrow, Hatfield, Potters Bar and the Bushey Swimming Club also enjoyed the evening.

Committee member Joy Thomson said: “It’s a lovely club.

Everyone enjoys themselves.”

The club is looking for new members to join them in the pool each Saturday between 5pm and 6pm.
