Yobs who ride motorcycles across the parks and woods of South Oxhey will be pursued with the full force of the law, it was announced last night.

Frustrated residents were told at a meeting of the Watford Rural Area Forum that officers planned to track offenders by air – with the police helicopter.

Speaking at the meeting PC Steven Sweet responded to repeated questions about nuisance youths on illegal motorcycles by saying that, where practicable, they would be pursued by the multi-million pound aircraft.

Residents reported an alarming rise in the number of youths riding uninsured and unlicensed bikes across the Oxhey Playing Fields and through the woods, saying they feared a serious accident and detested the noise created.

Immense damage, they claimed had been caused to – amongst other areas – the football pitches, which were churned up by the furious spinning of wheels.

PC Sweet, who said three bikes had been confiscated and crushed in the area already this year, explained that funding cuts had prevented motorcycle riding colleagues from pursuing offenders.

Better use of the force’s helicopter, he said, would allow the errant riders to be caught more effectively and punished, providing the machine was not needed on a more important job elsewhere.

The helicopter, which also serves Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire would work in conjunction with ground crews to trace offenders to an arrest point.

A representative of Hertfordshire Police confirmed the policy, saying helicopters have been used successfully elsewhere in the county to tackle the problem.

Why send up a police helicopter? People in the area know who is riding these bikes, why not drop leaflets to residents in the affected areas with a section for people to name these offenders with a freepost back to the council or police. It would be more cost effective.

Aren't helicopters rather expensive to run i.e. thousands of pounds per hour? Is that really cheaper than a copper or two on a bike?

Not that i'm complaining, the birds eye view will ensure those involved are caught.

Another police officer with his head in the clouds, playing lip service to the public.
So it is cheaper to run a million pound helicopter from Beds to Herts with a crew of 3 than to put 2 officers on a couple of off road bikes and a few litres of petrol?
I think Not!
With the winter now upon us, I would imagine most days/nights the helicopter wont even lift from it's base due to the weather, let alone it being available with it having to be used on more urgent jobs within the hugh area it covers ie. Herts, Beds, Bucks and Thames Valley force areas.
Back to the drawing board Pc Sweet or should that be to the Herts Police PR dept?

The police probably alreay know who it is, but once caught it will be slap on the wrist and be sat on the naughty step,
surely there is more inportant things the heli could be dealing with!!!

I've an idea, the army obviously trains their helicopter pilots on Salisbury plain etc. Maybe we could invite them down to South Oxhey for some target practise?

Its win, win, win, win. Police save money, pilots get practise, locals get rid of nuisance and society is a much better place.

Maybe I should keep my ideas to myself however.........
