As winter looms police are urging people to keep their homes safe.

The warning follows a number of burglaries in Dacorum where offenders were able to enter properties through unlocked doors or open windows.

Dacorum currently has the lowest rate of burglary in the county, but Hertfordshire police want to help residents keep it that way by offering burglary prevention advice and home visits.

If you are over 60, vulnerable or housebound, West Hertfordshire against Crime are offering a free security survey and installation of any security devices that may be required.

Police Crime Prevention Officer Dave Mahon said: “Dacorum currently has the lowest burglary rate in Hertfordshire out of all the ten Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership areas.

“However, we have to work hard to keep the figures low and falling. Winter and Christmas can pose particular risks but the good news is that these are easily reduced.

“Above all, I would recommend joining Neighbourhood Watch and getting a free security visit from either West Herts against Crime or myself.”

Police advise homeowners to ensure all windows, doors, garages and sheds are locked before leaving their properties.

They suggest when going out, to use timers or light sensitive light switches in late afternoon and evening.
