West Herts Crematorium named best in country

The West Herts Crematorium has been named the best in the country.

The popular Garston funeral site has won the Crematorium of the Year Award, in recognition of its service to the local community.

The nationwide competition, organised by the Memorial Awareness Board, aims to raise standards in burial grounds and crematoria and encourage better choice for the bereaved.

The Award, now in its 11th year, recognises crematoria that provide excellent service, have well maintained surroundings and are easily accessible for all.

The facility is run by a joint committee from Three Rivers, Dacorum, Hertsmere, and Watford Borough councils, supported by St Albans City and District Council.

It was warmly praised by judges.

Their report read: “Clearly there is an excellent management team encouraging the development of skills for all their staff.

“Over the years the buildings have clearly been sympathetically developed to meet today's requirements.

“These provide a superb facility that embraces excellent provision of service and care."

Crematorium Manager Stephen Brown said: "Staff are extremely proud.

“We have a fantastic team of dedicated people here, which has enabled the Crematorium to grow and develop to deliver a first class service.”

It does seem in rather bad taste, and it's not as if people from all over the country will be requesting that when they pass away they are cremated in Watford so rather pointless too at the end of the day.

However at the same time well done to the crematorium for providing the service that you do to families and friends at what is a very stressful and emotional time for them.

I dont see it as pointless, my dad and my grandad are there, and the staff there make an awful awful process slightly more manageable with their compassion and understanding. The grounds staff obviously take a great deal of pride in their work, why shouldnt they be rewarded for this? The crem is a beautiful, calm, peaceful place to go to remember and pay tribute to your loved ones and I for one, am truly grateful to have such a lovely place on my doorstep. Thanks.

Truly, the Monty Python lads would have written a wonderful sketch around "Crematorium of the Year"!

However, what does really concern me is this extraordinary and seemingly never-ending trend of giving people awards simply for doing the job they are paid to do. Once upon a time, the only people who gave each other awards and giant pats on the back were showbiz and media folks (of which I was very much a part, the media I mean, and I confess I did win a couple of awards for editing a genealogy journal, but that was strictly unpaid as a volunteer). Now, these days we have Milkman of the Year, Postman of the Year, Hairdresser of the Year and a load of other absurd and ridiculous titles and awards. Is there an award for Plumber of the Year or Chartered Accountant of the Year? Is suspect there probably is. Local councils, too, are always boasting about winning some award for Recycling Authority of the Year or some such nonsense.
Why can't we end this ridiculous fashion for giving awards and get back to the days when people could be satisfied simply for doing a good job and getting paid for it, rather than expecting boosts to their ego and self esteem in the form of national awards that only lend themselves to ridicule?

Sorry Roy but you are wrong. The award isn't for doing their jobs it's for doing their jobs exceptionally well, in fact better than anyone else in our country. Perhaps you've never done your job to the very highest standards but these people have.

Sounds like sour grapes on your part.

I did my job to the very highest standards as far as I was concerned and I got extremely well paid for it for many years, which was adequate enough reward for me. I didn't expect to win cups as well!
