A PLAN to build 12 flats and four houses on the site of a former timber yard off St Albans Road has been approved, despite concerns about highway safety.

Three one-bedroom flats, nine two-bedroom flats and four two-bedroom houses are set to be built, but not before changes to road design are made.

An application to build 20 flats on the site was turned down earlier this year.

Feelings were mixed about the revised application, with objectors claiming access to and from St Albans Road would increase the number of accidents on the busy route.

Councillor Sheila Jones told the development control committee: “This obviously is an improvement on both the previous application and what is there now, but one thing that really does bother me is the fact the whole road is a blackspot.” A safety survey assessing the impact of the plan will have to be carried out and any changes approved before building can start.

Developers Polestar will be expected to contribute nearly £35,000 towards open space, and £10,500 towards new cycle routes.
