Cyclists in Watford caught riding on pavements could face a £30 fine.

The clampdown on cyclists riding in pedestrian areas follows reports from businesses and members of the public in the town that they were hazardous.

Last week members of the Watford Safer Neighbourhood Team asked cyclists caught on the pavement to dismount from their bikes, with those who refused being told they would be given a £30 fine.

Police Community Support Officer Sarah Scanlon said: “This has been a very successful initiative which has resulted in several people being told that their actions will not be tolerated on the streets of Watford.

“The majority of people will comply and get off their bikes when approached. By cycling in a pedestrian only area you are putting pedestrians and yourself at risk. Those who do not comply will be given a £30 penalty notice.”

Further operations to tackle the problem have been planned over the coming months.
