Dentist celebrates national award

A thriving Chorleywood dental practice has beaten hundreds of rivals to scoop a prestigious national award.

The Rosebank Practice, in Shire Lane, has been named the best in the South East by leading industry magazine Dentistry.

Owner Dr Shameek Popat, who also lives in the village, took over the private practice in 2002.

He said he and his eight staff were delighted at the news. He said: “This award recognises the fabulous efforts made by everyone working in our surgery.

“It is fantastic to be recognised in this way.”

I remain totally baffled by this increasing practice of doling out awards to people who are getting extremely well paid simply to do a job. Dentist of the Year sounds pure Monty Pythonesque to me!!!

I believe we already have Milkman of the Year and Postman of the Year (since they are far less well paid than dentists, perhaps they deserve an award). But are there also national awards for Tailor of the Year, Charted Accountant of the Year, Secretary of the Year, Town Hall Clerk of the Year, Window Cleaner of the Year, Road Sweeper of the Year, Nuclear Physicist of the Year, etc, etc, etc?

Only show business and the media used to give each other awards all the time. Is the increasing practice of people doing humdrum ordinary jobs giving themselves awards somehow intended to increase their self esteem?
