Bushey post office 'can still be saved'

Councillors in Hertsmere have united to voice their anger at last week's “absolutely disgusting” decision to close a post office in Bushey, defiantly suggesting the branch can still be saved.

At last night's full meeting of Hertsmere Borough Council, Council Leader Councillor Morris Bright recommended a letter be written to secretary of state Peter Mandelson following his announcement that the government would work to not close any more branches.

Councillor Bright said: “I was very very angry that he got up before Christmas and said no more post offices should close we've saved it. It's a sleight of hand. It can be argued that Bushey was already in the melting pot but they could have told us this in November.

“Two and a half months is unacceptable. I think they could have saved this post office and I think they still can.”

Bushey Councillor Seamus Quilty joined the others condemning the decision to close the Moatfield branch after a lengthy consultation and review.

The branch was not on the original closure list but was added after post offices in Buckinghamshire and Essex were kept open.

Councillor Quilty said: “For those that listened to the news today you would have heard that the Post Office has announced significant and large profits. This is the first time all branches of the Post Office have been in profit for over 20 years.

"Isn't it galling that they then turn around and kick Bushey in the teeth by announcing the closure of this post office?

“We should write to the government and the Post Office to tell them that we deplore their despicable actions on behalf of the local residents of Bushey.”

Liberal Democrat Councillor Roger Kutchinksy hinted at a similar solution to one in Essex where the county council took up the running of a threatened post office but agreed with Councillor Bright that this was impossible for a borough council to attempt.

The branch is due to close on February 11.

Where is Clappison's voice? The Tories are an absolute disgrace, they allow Brown to destroy the very fabric of our society and do nothing about it because they know that Brown and his acolytes, such as Ward, will be kicked out at the next election.

Rather than letting New Labour commit political suicide they should be acting in the best interests of our country.

Yeah...right...

Their heads are so far up their own arrises when their snouts aren't in the 'free public money trough', it wouldn't matter what colour their politics are.

Sad, but true!

For all intents and purposes we live in a one party state, our only choice is whether to vote for someone with a gruff Yorkshire/scottish accent (labour), upper class English accent (conservatives), someone who wants to be your best mate but is a bit useless at the end of the day (Liberals), Hippies (green party) or someone whose every second word is one way or the other offensive (BNP).

Apart from that they are all the same unfortunately, all chasing power and fame and not really caring too much about the people they are meant to serve.

As I remember, Nick Griffin(B.N.P.)is the only politician who has come out and said that he would NOT claim expenses and would return any salary paid to him which was left over, after he paid HIS OWN WAY,mortgage, bills, transport, etc.

Imagine if Claire Ward done the same..
