GOVERNMENT plans to clamp down on bogus charity street collections have been welcomed by Watford MP Claire Ward.

Miss Ward said she hoped the proposed new rules announced on Wednesday would help restore public trust and confidence in the charitable sector.

The MP recently warned people across Watford to ignore the thousands of leaflets delivered locally by a firm called Translimit Ltd.

The firm gave the impression it was a charity collecting clothes and other items for people in the "Third World". But investigations by the MP revealed the firm was trading illegally and was apparently selling the clothes on to companies in Eastern Europe for a profit.

Miss Ward said: "The Government has moved very quickly to protect the good name of the voluntary and community sector.

"What is important now is to get this new legislation into place as soon as possible."
