Soldiers to parade in Watford receive hostile welcome in Luton

Soldiers set to parade through Watford have received a hostile reception during a homecoming march in Luton today.

An extreme Islamic group waved posters reading “Anglian soldiers go to hell” as more than 200 members of the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Anglian Regiment, marched through the Bedfordshire town.

Police officers had to intervene as people who had turned out to welcome the troops home, confronted members of the group.

The troop, who are known as The Poachers and recruit from across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, will be in Watford town centre tomorrow (Wednesday) for the Freedom of the Borough march, organised by Watford Borough Council.

The event marks their return from a six-month tour in Iraq.

The troop will set off from Lower High Street at 12.30pm, and will be inspected by Councillor Jan Brown, chairman of the council, outside St Mary's Church.

I may not agree with the war but come on, the army don't have a choice in places they are sent. If you are going to boo, get on a train to London, get off the tube at Westminster and boo the MP's that sent us to war.

I hope the people of Watford show better manners that the people of Luton.

Anyone want to take a modest bet that many of the protesters were members of Luton's Muslim community? Wasn't it Luton, I seem to recall, that the suicide bombers who murdered over 30 people in London used as a staging post in the atrocity? Clearly, this is a place where they could expect to find a safe harbour amongst Islamic fanatics and terrorists.

These people are too ignorant and backward to understand that soldiers have no say in what they do and where they serve and fight. They have to follow orders from the government and their commanders.

If anti-war protesters want to make a point, then they should be holding their protest in Downing Street and not against ordinary serving soldiers who have no freedom of choice.

I hope Watford's Muslim community behave with a little more common sense and dignity.

Please be there to support our troops and ensure the same response that was witnessed in Luton is overshadowed.

See you there proudly waving with your Flag!

I hope, looking at the pictures on the BBC this wont turn out to be a race issue like so many other stories turn into.

Lets all get out there tomorrow and show those brave soldiers that their efforts ARE appreciated even if support for the war itself is split.

Roy, you may be right but thats a mighty big assumption you made and saddly there are just as many non muslims who have aimed their opposition at the war at the troops and not as is quite rightly pointed out the government.

I wonder if this country was invaded if the donughts that spoilt the parade today would turn down the offer of being defended by the armed forces. Probably not the hypocrytical idiots

They have a job to do, it may not be what we agree with, but they deserve our support!
I bet most of the boos were from the muslim community in Luton.
If they don't like what we do in this country, there's the door and go back to Pakistan!

That’s a bit close to the mark, just because they come from Pakistan doesn’t mean they don’t like this country. People have the fundamental right to show this form of protest if they wish to. I bet you find that most of the people booing are 2nd or 3rd generation immigrates and the UK is the only home they have – so do we deport them if they were born in Luton? No we shouldn’t.

I don’t agree with the protest but also we shouldn’t start deporting people just because they boo at something.

Oh yeah – not all Muslims come from Pakistan.

I chose that county due to the ethnic diveristy of Luton

Hopefully the relevant authorities will deal with the hecklers accordingly and apply the law. Those of all faiths who applauded our brave and selfless soldiers should be proud of themselves, those who felt the need to hurl abuse should think about the benefits of living in a democracy. Our soldiers are sent to try to aid in ensuring people and faiths all over the world also have that ability. If the hecklers want to vent their feelings then do so at the people who send them there, the Government. We should ALL be proud of the job our soldiers are doing and give them every opportunity to allow us to give them a well deserved pat on the back.

They probably were not even from Luton, looking at the placards,it seemed organised. If they had not caused a stir WE would not have even known they would be in Watford, so at least it has worked against them and there should be a good turnout.
I will keep my eye out for any Meriden Old Boys lol..

"I may not like what you say, but i defend to death your right to say it!" However in this case what I might say to those protesting is you are taking your right to freedom of speach for granted, these soldiers deserve your respect and gratitude. I'd like to see you exercise your right to freedom of speach with a paramilitary's AK47 in your mouth, or an RPG up you A*se! But of course you can exercise that right in this country, and why. . .
Because of the boys (and nowadays girls) in the thin red line!
God Bless them, and glad they are home safe and sound!

I think these people are making it perfectly clear where their loyalties lay, and it's not to our Queen and country. I can't believe blatant treason will go completly unpunished while if you get cought doing 40 in a 30 the law will f**k you.

Kryten,
I dont know that the treason laws in this country have been used in times of general peace, altho I'm fairly positive they were used during the world wars to help remove spies ect. However I'm sure if these scumbags were arrested with Treason some busybody lawyer would argue that it was in breach of their Human rights and that government would let them off with a massive compensation package. God Bless the Liberal Movement!
However you and other people are totally correct, if these people are so angered by the actions of our government, and hate the way we live our lives so much, why are they still here? I'm sure there are other contires in this world where they could live their hate filled little lives, and live the exact life style they want! They have feet, if you dont like it, lump it, or bvgger off!!

Shoot, at the risk of sounding like I agree with the demonstrators - I don't in any way shape or form - they DO have a right to have their opinions, they were just WRONG to voice them during the parade and WRONG to aim their bile at the troops.

As someone else noted, they should go to Westminster and make their feelings known there. I'm sure that we all realise that there are many British people who don't agree with the war either, are they guilty of treason too or is that just reserved for those of foreign decent?

But I do agree with the sentiment that if they are not born in this country and do not like the way it is governed or some of its policies they can always go back to their native country. No one is forcing them to stay are they?
