West Herts College has said its redevelopment plans will be unaffected by the funding cuts facing more than one hundred colleges across the country.

Some 144 colleges have had their building works frozen while their capital funding grants are reviewed by the Learning and Skills Council.

It is thought projects worth as much as £170million could be written off by colleges if they do get the financial means they were banking on.

The redevelopment of West Herts College's Hempstead Road campus, set to be completed in 2010, will see it united with the Cassio campus, which is currently based in Langley Way.

The college is also building a new Dacorum campus in Hemel Hempstead.

Elizabeth Rushton, West Herts College principal, said: “In light of the news that a number of colleges are having funds cut on their rebuilding plans, I am pleased to say that West Herts College is not one of those affected.

“The new campus on Hempstead Road is not affected and building and funding will continue. Onward plans for Dacorum campus are progressing well. As with the case for the Hempstead Road development, the strength of our case is recognised and its need appreciated.”
