Plumber fined for boiler scam

An unqualified plumber who illegally fitted a faulty gas boiler has been ordered to pay more than £1,100 by magistrates.

Anthony Smith, 49, of Cobb Green, Watford, fraudulently told a customer he was registered with the Council of Registered Gas Installers (CORGI) when fitting the boiler near Harrow last year.

In fact, Brent Magistrates' Court heard last week that Smith presented the customer with a fake number CORGI number – meaning he was breaking the law.

In fact, Smith, who operates a plumbing and heating business trading as ‘T’s Crew’, has never been CORGI registered.

Trading Standards director Bill Bilon said: “The safety of the public is paramount and that is the reason why anyone who carries out gas installations has to be CORGI approved.

“Furthermore, traders who make false claims as their membership of professional trade associations gain an unfair competitive advantage over those who are properly qualified.”

Smith pleaded guilty on Tuesday to two offences of fraud and unfair trading. He was fined £500 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £692.

I wonder how many people have a 'Tony Smith' boiler fitted in their house without knowing they could be in danger.
I also hope that the authorities are trying to look up his previous clients to warn them.
I know it's common sense, but too often we hear about missed opportunities that could prevent harm or possibly death - let's hope this doesn't become one of them!
I'm surprised our roving reporter isn't following it up!

£500 is very low for a matter that could have led to a manslaughter charge. Fortunately this was not the case, noting in the wrong hands gas boilers are dangerous household appliances

The fine does seem rather low and not much of a deterrent.

As he put lives at risk, in a callous way too, shouldnt a custodial sentence also have been appropriate. I mean, you can be sent to jail for dangerous driving so why not dangerous plumbing - the end result of both activities could lead to death after all

what a disgraceful fine? That must be about two days wages? I hope he gets a record at least, they should have looked at how long he had been falsly trading as Corgi, and found out about other customers, as they had been diddled as well, can't be hard to find that out? No wonder there are so many cowboys still out there, no real deterent!!!

Iam with Partadise on this, if the familys house burnt down because of a dodgily fit boiler assuming they made it out alive how would they stand in regards of their house insurance? wouldnt the insurance company say take a hike it wasnt professionally (corgi)fitted.
A custodial sentance would fit this offenders actions perfectly
